H2Air -
Planet Air Aerator
How is it different from other aerators?
Case study – Twin Creeks Golf & Country Club
Phil Beal – Troon Golf International Superintendant of the Year, 2009 |
| At Twin creeks we decided to reduce our regular two renovations a year to one in the spring. We needed to keep the revenue and golf rounds to a maximum through the autumn to reach our financial targets. Our autumn renovation has always been critical to us after a long hot spring and summer and we needed to ensure that the health of the greens would not be compromised by cutting out the renovation process.
The decision was made to do more frequent aeration on the greens through the summer and autumn. We invested in the revolutionary PlanetAir slicing machine which was brought in at the beginning of December 2009. The first time we put it across our greens we could not believe the result, the patent planetary action of the aeration blade gave us minimal disruption to the surface and the green was back to normal after a mow. We kept ahead of the golfers and the application took less than 4 ½ hours. It was decided that we would aerate the greens every 3 weeks in conjunction with a dusting program. After a couple of applications we noticed significant root growth, this was very encouraging as notoriously we struggle to keep our root density through the harsh summer months. We noticed a reduction in required irrigation which in turn allowed us to keep the surface dryer than normal and our disease pressure was reduced dramatically, not to mention the savings on our extremely limited water supply. Through the autumn the turf density has improved and the health of the plant is as good as if we had completed our normal renovation. We look forward to increased plant health over the coming months which will put us into a strong position for the spring. In conclusion, we have succeeded in all of our goals. The greens are strong and healthy and the surfaces are perfect, our revenue increased by $70,000 in April over previous years, our water usage has been reduced due to increased absorbsion and our costs are down thanks to decreased need for fungicides and infiltrants. We use PlanetAir every 3 to 4 weeks on our greens and it has become our most valued and critical piece of equipment in retaining our greens at the highest level. |

Testimonials
Feedback on the effectivness of the PlanetAir Aerator
“I believe PlanetAir is a “must have” piece of equipment for anybody who has turf quality as their accountability or relies on it for their existence. Whether you are the Chairman of Greens or Finance, the General Manager, the Superintendant, the Environmental Committee, the Member or paying guest, PlanetAir provide benefits across all areas.“Rob Selley – General Manager, The River Club, South Africa |
“PlanetAir is the finest piece of golf course equipment I have seen in my 18 years as a Superintendent. With its frequent use I have reduced my greens core aerating to only once per year and my putting surfaces are the driest, most disease free I have ever experienced.”John Harkness, GCS, Oak Valley Golf Club, Beaumont, CA |
“What a great machine. We aerate, mow and there is no effect on ball roll at all—no hopping or jumping offline. I use PlanetAir once a month and have eliminated fall aerification, much to the delight of our players, owner, GM and Pro. We expect to see an increase in players when other courses do their aerification. I’ve gone to watering greens once per week and we are not experiencing dry spots like we did before PlanetAir.”Michael J. Scott, CGCS, Cypress Ridge, Arroyo Grande, CA |

Title: New Technology to Eliminate Organic Matter Accumulation in Bermudagrass Putting Greens
Collaborators: David Chalmers and Milt Engelke
Objectives: Compare new venting aerification technologies with industry standard practices of organic matter extraction and organic matter dilution on high, moderate, and low growth rate bermudagrass varieties.
Impact: South Texas alone has more than 150 golf courses with 99% of these locations managing bermudagrass greens. Currently superintendents do not have effective methods to adequately manage organic matter accumulation in bermudagrass greens. Texas golf courses are faced with non-stop traffic and rounds of
golf 365 days a year and need to find tools to cut water consumption, pesticide use, and still produce quality putting greens year round.
The objectives are to
1) determine the benefits and limitations of new venting aerification
technology in managing organic matter accumulation in high, moderate, and low growth rate
bermudagrass varieties, and
2) compare venting aerification with the industry standard
practices of organic matter extraction (conventional aerification) and organic matter dilution
(topdressing).
Preliminary data indicate Planetair® venting technology may:
* Decrease fungicide usage by 70%
* Eliminate the need for wetting agents
* Eliminate the need for verticutting
* Reduce or eliminate the need for core aerification.
The research differs from previous work because the new venting aerification technology has
not been compared directly with conventional aerification and topdressing methods, and
scientific information on ways to successfully manage aggressive varieties of bermudagrass
putting greens does not exist. We will monitor thatch reduction/accumulation in a previously
established (1997) bermudagrass putting green varieties (Tifdwarf, Tifeagle and Mini-Verde).
